Electric vehicles are just better. It’s hard to say this or explain this to people who don’t have EVs without coming across as patronizing or a fanatic or something. But it’s true. They drive nicer, they’re more convenient if you have home or even just workplace charging, they typically have newer tech inside, they have less maintenance, and they are safer. Are there cases where people are not happy with their EVs or where EVs just don’t work for them for some reason? Of course, but they are few and far between.
Purchasing A BEV Next?
J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience Ownership Study confirms this. In a recent survey of 6,164 owners of pure electric vehicles and plugin hybrids, J.D. Power found that 94% of pure EV (BEV) owners were likely to consider purchasing another one for their next car. But, hey, considering something is a soft commitment, right? Well, on the flip side, only 12% were likely to consider replacing their EV with any vehicle with an internal combustion engine. That includes hybrids and even plugin hybrids! So, if I’m reading that data right, there’s a crossover of 6% who are considering both options — buying a BEV again or buying a non-BEV.
Interestingly, in the past several years that J.D. Power has been doing this study, the results have been stunningly consistent. 94–97% of BEV owners have consistently said they’re likely to consider purchasing another one for their next car.
Changes in EV Ownership Satisfaction
Respondents were surveyed between August and December of last year, 2024. Overall, owner satisfaction of EVs was up significantly compared to a year before.
“After a decline in overall satisfaction in 2024, owners of both premium and mass market battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are expressing a change of sentiment this year, according to the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Ownership Study,” the company writes.
Interestingly, it’s the owners of cheaper EVs who have faced the fewest issues with their cars. “Mass market BEV quality continues to outperform premium BEVs: Owners of mass market BEVs once again experience fewer problems than do owners of premium BEVs, albeit the gap has narrowed this year. Among the top 10 BEV models with the fewest reported problems in the study, seven are in the mass market segment,” J.D. Power writes.
That said, it’s still owners of premium vehicles who are most satisfied with their vehicles. “Previous iterations of this study have found that PHEV owners were much less satisfied than BEV owners. However, new for this year is the addition of the premium PHEV segment. Satisfaction among owners in this segment is 741, which is higher than mass market BEVs (725) and mass market PHEVs (632) and only 15 index points lower than satisfaction among owners of premium BEVs.” Who would’ve thought it — owners of premium vehicles like their cars more.
The Most Satisfied EV Owners
So, which EV owners are most satisfied with their cars? The following are the EV models with the highest scores:
- BMW iX — 790
- BMW i4 — 783
- Rivian R1S — 770
- Hyundai IONIQ 6 — 751
- Kia EV6 — 743
- Chevrolet Equinox EV — 737
Congratulations to BMW — that’s quite an accomplishment getting the first two spots. And congratulations to the others at the top as well.
