Epiroc has pre-launched an updated version of its class-leading SmartROC T40 surface drill rig at bauma this week in Munich. The new SmartROC T40, which is widely used in quarrying and smaller mines, includes a brand-new operator cabin.
“The SmartROC T40 is a very well-liked machine thanks to its productivity and class-leading fuel-efficiency,” says Ulf Gyllander, Global Product Manager, Epiroc Surface division. “Visitors at the exhibition will have a chance to take a closer look at all the benefits that the new cabin offers.”
The company says the new generation builds on the legacy Epiroc has built up from the previous generations of SmarROC T40 surface drill rigs. The new rig offers the same reliability, further reduce costs and TCO, whilst also substantially increasing operator comfort.

IM Editorial Director Paul Moore met with Gyllander at the event for more insight. He said the SmartROC T40 Mark II model already has a number of upgrades from 2022, including new selection of steel length in the carousel, enhanced engine RPM control and 15 in touch screen – but this latest pre-release is all about the state of the art new cabin.
He stated: “The cabin we have today is good but we wanted to reduce noise and vibration even further for the operator as well as a new climate control system and a three point safety belt. It also has an air filtration system with HEPA filter that meets expected future air regulations in Europe; plus there is a CO2 surveillance system in the cabin and the option of a blastproof front window. It also has electrically heated mirrors. Overall for operators it is a big step and a much improved environment.”
This is the first drill model in the Epiroc range that this new cabin will be deployed on; and it will be available for new SmartROC T40 drills from Q4 2025. From there the roadmap is to apply it across the SmartROC range including the COPROD technology C50 and CL rigs plus the DTH rigs – D50, D55, D60 and at the top end, the D65.
