New starting price of BYD Seagull EV is 56,800 yuan ($7,800), making it one of the cheapest subcompact EVs in Asia

BYD has announced a significant price cut for its Seagull EV, bringing the new starting price to 56,800 yuan ($7,800). This is a substantial reduction from the previous starting price of 69,800 yuan ($9,500) for the non-Smart Driving Vitality Edition model.

BYD made the announcement to media to showcase the company’s “commitment to innovation and sustainability.” In China, in the face of the heavy tariffs, strategic decisions and product offerings continue to shape the future of electric vehicles. During such a time, BYD is reinforcing its position as the leading player in the market.

The Seagull EV offers two battery options: 30.1 kWh and 38.9 kWh, providing a CLTC range of 305 km (190 mi) and 405 km (252 mi) respectively. These battery options and range specifications make the Seagull EV a competitive choice in the market.

The dimensions of the Seagull EV are: 3,780 mm long, 1,715 mm wide, and 1,540 mm tall, reflecting its compact yet spacious design. In 2025, BYD’s sales of new energy vehicles exceeded one million units, with 416,388 EVs and 569,710 PHEVs sold. This remarkable achievement represents a 39% increase in EV sales and a 76% increase in PHEV sales compared to the previous year. Such growth highlights BYD’s successful expansion and increasing influence in the global automotive industry.

Additionally, BYD’s overseas vehicle sales in 2025 surpassed 206,000 units, demonstrating the company’s strong international presence. The launch price of the Seagull EV in Europe is projected to be under £20,000 ($26,000), making it an attractive option for budget-conscious consumers seeking reliable and eco-friendly transportation, even if not nearly as cheap as it is in China.
