G Kishan Reddy Calls for Mining Sector to Boost Critical Mineral Recovery for Green Tech and Steel Expansion

Union Minister G Kishan Reddy has urged India’s mining sector to prioritize the recovery of critical minerals from existing dumps and tailings to power the future of green technologies and advanced alloys. Speaking at the 6th edition of Steel India 2025 in Mumbai, Reddy emphasized that utilizing already available mineral resources is essential for achieving the ambitious National Steel Policy targets—300 MT production by 2031 and 500 MT by 2047.

Highlighting India’s journey towards a resilient and sustainable raw material strategy, Reddy stressed that the mining and steel sectors must work collaboratively with central and state governments. He pointed out the urgent need for speedy operationalization of greenfield mines, warning that delays waste vital national resources.

Reddy also noted enhanced cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) to streamline project clearances, coupled with the government’s push for regulatory reforms over the past six months. The ultimate goal is to make India a self-reliant and global leader in sustainable steel production, while reducing reliance on imports and meeting the nation’s climate commitments.

The Minister’s remarks underline a broader government strategy of promoting innovation, sustainability, and a “whole-of-government” approach to fortify India’s position in the global green economy.
