ABB launches next-gen battery system for electric vehicles

ABB is showcasing its innovative solutions at bauma 2025 (April 7-13) the world’s leading trade fair for construction vehicles and machinery and mining machines, with the standout from a mining perspective being a next-generation traction battery system for heavy-duty electric vehicles.

The company is hosting a press event this morning to discuss the work being done towards making these industries greener, smarter and more efficient.

The company is set to launch a range of products designed to provide comprehensive solutions for hybrid and fully-electric construction and mining vehicles, catering to both new builds and retrofits, including:

  • HES580 Mobile Inverter: The first 3-level inverter for working machine applications, the HES580 increases motor efficiency by reducing harmonic losses by up to 75%. The inverter also helps to extend the motor lifetime as less stress is placed on the winding system;
  • Pro Battery Series: Next-generation traction battery system for heavy-duty electric vehicles, these batteries are compact and lightweight in design and offer high safety and extended lifetime.
  • AMXE160 Motor: The AMXE portfolio, which now includes the new AMXE160 motor, offers high configuration with various frame sizes and power options ranging from 30 kW to over 600 kW. The complete portfolio delivers high-performance motors with improved power density and efficiency for demanding environments.

In addition to onboard vehicle solutions, ABB says it is helping customers decarbonise by producing energy-efficient variable speed drives:

  • ACS880LC Multidrive: Engineered-to-order fully liquid cooled, enclosed cabinet designed for harsh environments to ensure reliable operation;
  • ACS8080 MV Drive: ABB’s newest medium voltage air-cooled drive offering reliability, performance and flexibility.

ABB will also present a range of electrification and automation products, including its eMine portfolio, B&R solutions and the latest Harnessflex® conduit systems, highlighting its commitment to engineering comprehensive solutions for the mining and construction industries.

The Harnessflex EVO™ metallic conduit is designed for construction and mining vehicle applications where low smoke and toxicity is a concern. An expansion of the existing Harnessflex EVO range, which includes durable nylon conduits and the world’s first EV connector backshells, this new liquid resistant, enhanced low fire hazard flexible steel conduit protects critical electrical wiring on demanding mining and construction electric vehicle applications.

This includes Power Distribution Units (PDUs), Motor Control Units (MCUs), DC Drive Motors, E-Axles and High Voltage Battery Packs.
