Altitude, a leading carbon removal financier, has committed to procuring over 25,000 tons of CO₂ Removal Certificates from biochar-based carbon removal facilities in West Africa. These certificates will be issued via the Puro Registry, ensuring high standards of verification and traceability. This +25,000t carbon dioxide removal (CDR) purchase is part of the recently announced 50,000t Altitude: Ascent facility. For context, the average CO2 emissions of a car in Europe are 1.5t per year, and 25,000t CDR thus represents around 16,500 cars. Per IPCC, the world needs more than 10GT of CDR yearly by 2050.
BiocharCDR is produced through pyrolysis technology, which converts agricultural waste and forest residues into stable carbon, effectively locking it away for centuries. This method provides a durable form of carbon sequestration, helping mitigate the impact of climate change by moving co2 from the short carbon cycle into the long carbon cycle.
Altitude’s commitment further strengthens its growing portfolio of carbon removal credits, contributing to efforts to reduce the levels of co2 in the atmosphere. Purchasing from facilities in West Africa will support the growth of the CDR industry in the region, making use of abundant biowaste while allowing facilities there to grow and scale faster — offering local jobs and bringing revenue.
“Altitude’s commitment to high-quality biochar projects is vital for scaling effective carbon removal technologies,” said Julien Jacob, Head of Offtakes & Investment Solutions at Puro.earth. “Their involvement demonstrates the critical role of long-term, verified projects in the carbon removal market.”
This agreement, supported by due diligence from Bioflux, highlights the importance of biocharCDR in the carbon removal landscape, a promising solution for permanent carbon storage that also supports sustainable agricultural practices and local development in West Africa and many other regions.
