On April 10, BYD Philippines will officially launch the eMAX 7, an all-electric multi-purpose vehicle (MPV).

The Philippines is predominantly an MPV market, as evidenced by the top selling vehicle, the Toyota Innova, a seven-seater with a diesel burner. Finding a space in that crowded but lucrative market may change BYD’s fortunes. It is anticipated to compete with models like the Toyota Innova Zenix (a hybrid) and other ICE-powered vehices like the Hyundai Custin and GAC M6 Pro.

The official launch of the BYD eMAX 7 is scheduled for the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) this year. But even before the formal unveiling, reservations for the eMAX 7 are currently being accepted at BYD dealerships nationwide.

According to product literature provided by BYD, the eMAX 7 will be available in Standard and Superior Captain variants, offering seven and six-seater configurations, respectively. The vehicle measures 4710mm long, 1810mm wide, and 1690mm tall, with a 2800mm wheelbase and 170mm of ground clearance. The Standard model is reported to have a power output of 163 PS, while the Superior Captain variant will produce 204 PS. Both variants will feature a lithium-iron phosphate “Blade” battery with an AC recharge time of 11 hours and a DC recharge time of 45 minutes. The Standard model claims a driving range of up to 420 km, while the Superior Captain variant can travel up to 530 km on a single charge.

The eMAX 7 incorporates BYD’s Blade Battery technology, known for its safety and energy density. Additional features may include a Vehicle-to-Load (VTOL) function and regenerative braking. The Superior Captain variant is expected to offer premium features such as captain seats, ventilated seats, electric adjustability for the front passenger seat, a metal welcome plate, and an electronic tailgate.

No price has been released, but CleanTechnica sources at BYD said “it will be surprisingly affordable.” Given the competitive pricing vehicles in its current line-up, the eMAX7’s sticker price could be closer to the Zenix’s PhP 1.9 million (~$32,000).

Local automotive analysts see the introduction of the eMAX 7 as the first affordable all-electric MPV in the Philippines and think it will significantly impact the market. BYD Philippines holds one very important ace up its sleeve that no other electric vehicle distributor has — the favorable backing of one of the country’s largest banks, the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) — which also happens to have the largest automotive loan portfolio. This is crucial in a land where nearly 96% of vehicle purchases are made through financing.

Its electric powertrain and long driving range could appeal to environmentally conscious buyers and those seeking lower running costs. The availability of charging infrastructure across the Philippines, supported by ACMobility’s expansion efforts, will be important for its adoption. Initial reactions to the eMAX 7 have been positive, with anticipation for an electric seven-seater MPV in the Philippine market.

The Philippine electric vehicle market is currently growing, with various models available across different segments from brands like BYD, Nissan, MG, Kia, and Tesla. The eMAX 7’s entry into the MPV segment as an affordable electric option is a significant development and could encourage further adoption of EVs in the country.
