Well, it has happened. For the third time, and the second quarter in a row, BYD’s full electric passenger vehicle (BEV) sales have scored higher than Tesla’s BEV sales. In fact, in the 1st quarter of 2025, BYD had 23.7% more BEV sales globally than Tesla!

In unit terms, BYD had 79,707 more BEV sales than Tesla.

If we look at overall plugin passenger vehicle sales, BYD had 192.9% more sales. Wowza.

In unit terms, BYD had 649,407 more total passenger vehicle sales.

Tesla fans, and particularly very vocal stockholders, think that all will be corrected as new Tesla Model Y production ramps up. The belief is that there is massive demand for this updated Model Y, and the only notable reason for Tesla’s big sales drop in the first quarter was retooling of the Model Y production lines.

On the flip side, those who believe more in BYD, and who are a bit more critical of Tesla’s decisions and trajectory, see BYD’s rapid rollout of new models, increasing expansion globally, and faster innovation as being far superior to Tesla’s story. The crossover we’ve seen in the past two quarters is believed to be a permanent one, with the gap between Tesla’s sales and BYD’s BEV and NEV sales mostly growing in the future.

Which story do you believe in? What are your thoughts on the Q1 numbers, the coming quarters, and long-term trends?

To close, interactive versions of the charts and graphs above are below (best viewed and played with on a real computer, not a phone). The bar charts, in particular, are useful for comparing sales in the same quarters — quarter by quarter.
