Last year, the world bought 17.2 million plugin vehicles, and 10.8 million pure battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). Overall, 22% of new auto sales were plugin vehicle sales, more than one out of five, and 14% were BEV sales, almost one out of seven. That’s “a robust rise from the 16% (10% BEV) of 2023 and the 14% (10% BEV) of 2022. Not to mention the 9% (6.1% BEV) of 2021, or the 4% of 2020….”

But the past is the past. What about the future?

How many plugin vehicles, or pure electric vehicles, will the world buy this year? How many will we buy next year, in 2027, in 2028, in 2029 and 2030? We used to do reader surveys on this topic annually, but it’s been a while. Achieving such high EV penetration now, with the Chinese EV market growing rapidly, with the EU’s CO2 emissions requirements for automakers up in the air, with the US being in a sort of slo-mo chaos, and with the rest of the world starting to gobble up new EVs, it’s an interesting time in the market, and a time with a lot of questions.

If you are up for registering your best guess, chime in on the survey below (also linked here). Though, while much of what I’ve written above is about sales volumes, I actually prefer to focus on percentage of overall auto sales, so the questions will be about that instead of volumes. Also, while I include plugin vehicles in the discussion above, I just want to focus this survey on BEVs, so that’s what the survey questions concern. I look forward to seeing your votes!
