Huawei-Backed AITO Releases M9 SUV at Philippine Auto Show

The AITO M9, a flagship SUV from the Chinese carmaker, Seres is poised to redefine the Philippine luxury electric vehicle market with its blend of advanced technology and sophisticated design. First presented at the 20th Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) 2025, the M9 is distributed by QSJ Motors.

According to company executives at the MIAS launch, the M9 was assembled with software and hardware technology from Huawei and components from leading global suppliers. The “M9 aims to deliver a transformative driving experience for discerning consumers,” Kevin Chiang, managing director of QSJ Motors, said.

QSJ Motors Philippines first showcased the Seres 5, Seres 5 Saker Falcon Edition (SF), and Seres 7 in July last year.

A Huawei-on-wheels

China’s leading tech supplier Huawei has been behind Seres in the development of AITO, which according to company executives means “Adding Intelligence to Auto,” after Huawei sold its electric vehicle trademark Aito to Seres, its car manufacturing partner, late last year. This strategic move underscores the Shenzhen-based technology conglomerate’s evolving focus towards becoming a primary supplier of automotive systems and technological expertise, rather than a direct competitor in the vehicle market. This decision marks a notable adjustment in Huawei’s approach to the burgeoning EV sector, where it initially explored the possibility of direct vehicle manufacturing.

Seres, after co-developing the AITO brand in collaboration with Huawei, last July announced its intention to acquire the complete trademark and patent portfolio of the brand for a sum of 2.5 billion yuan (approximately US$343 million). This transaction was finalized by the close of 2024, as indicated in a filing by the Shanghai Stock Exchange-listed Seres in March 2024.

This announcement serves as a reiteration of Huawei’s long-held position that it will not independently engage in the production of automobiles, instead opting to empower its partners with its advanced technological innovations. This strategic pivot allows Huawei to capitalize on the growing EV market as a key enabler, supplying critical components and software without the capital-intensive undertaking of establishing its own car manufacturing operations.

The AITO M9

The exterior of the M9 presents a striking aesthetic, characterized by a streamlined two-tone body that evokes a sense of both elegance and power. Measuring 5230mm in length, 1999mm in width, and 1800mm in height, with a 3110mm wheelbase, the vehicle is designed for both urban maneuverability and stable, comfortable long-distance travel. Its aerodynamic profile, achieving a drag coefficient of 0.279 Cd, is complemented by distinctive Galaxy headlights and Starlight taillights, enhancing its visual appeal.

Performance is a key attribute of the AITO M9, featuring a smart dual-motor all-wheel-drive system that delivers 365 kW of power and 675 Nm of torque. This enables the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. The 52 kWh battery provides over 200 kilometers of electric range, while the intelligent Range Extender platform, utilizing an efficient onboard generator, extends the total range to over 1,200 kilometers. The fuel tank, capable of being filled in just five minutes, effectively acts as a range extending “power bank.”

Inside, the M9 prioritizes passenger comfort and luxury. The spacious cabin features flexible seating arrangements, including Zero Gravity seats designed for optimal support. High-quality materials such as white ash wood trim, crystal knobs, genuine leather seats, and a panoramic sunroof contribute to the vehicle’s premium feel. An adaptive dual armrest, a 25-speaker sound system, intelligent storage spaces, a dual-mode in-car refrigerator, a fragrance system, and 16.8 million color LED ambient lights enhance the overall experience.

Technological integration is central to the M9’s design, with a seamless connection between the instrument cluster, central control, and passenger screens. Intelligent driving systems, including million-pixel intelligent headlights and real-time power management, are designed to ensure a worry-free driving experience.

Safety is paramount in the AITO M9, which boasts a robust vehicle body structure and advanced safety features. It is equipped with nine airbags and has achieved a “super” five-star rating from the China New Car Safety Assessment Program, with a record-breaking score of 93.9%. The vehicle includes a comprehensive suite of 20 active safety features, providing advanced front, lateral, and rear protection.

AITO as a strategy

By consolidating the AITO brand under Seres, Huawei signals a clear intent to operate as a Tier 1 supplier, similar to established global automotive technology providers. This approach allows Huawei to potentially partner with a wider range of automakers in the future, offering its specialized technologies to enhance their EV offerings. For Seres, acquiring full ownership of the AITO brand provides greater autonomy in its market strategy and strengthens its position as a significant player in the EV landscape.

The financial transaction also provides Seres with valuable intellectual property, further solidifying its long-term growth prospects in the rapidly expanding electric vehicle sector.
