Further driving his point home, he cited examples of Indian-led AI solutions in the fields of healthcare, education and agriculture that are seeing a global impact. The country has been investing heavily in AI infrastructure, literacy and policies so that it is accessible and available for public benefit.

Modi’s Thoughts On Developing AI For Humanity

The Indian Prime Minister’s perspective on advancing AI is not limited by only technical advancements. During the podcast, Modi touched on the idea of developing AI while keeping its broader implications as a guideline.

He believes that AI should primarily augment human capabilities rather than replace them. Furthermore, he shared his belief with Fridman that AI is not a threat to humanity, but rather a tool that can benefit society if used responsibly.

He stated, “Every time, as technology advanced, humans adapted and stayed a step ahead. It has always been the case.”

Emphasizing his point, he said that AI enables people to reflect on what it truly means to be human and that the invention and implementations of AI have challenged how people view work itself.

Modi is, however, firmly convinced that no technology can truly replace the creativity and imagination of a human mind. He is certain that AI cannot function sustainably without human intelligence to shape and guide it.

AI Revolution In India Under Modi’s Leadership

Under the Modi government, the nation saw the launch of the IndiaAI Mission, which has allocated ₹10,300 crore, to be utilised over the next five years to enhance India’s AI capabilities.

Among the key initiatives taken by the Indian government to further AI capabilities, is the development of a high-end computing facility with over 18000 GPUs, making it one of the largest computing facilities globally.

Moreover, the country plans to produce its own GPUs in the next three to five years and is also ramping up its semiconductor manufacturing, with five plants under construction.

The infrastructure that India is developing is aimed at supporting indigenous AI solutions, particularly in Indian languages. The Indian government has taken the initiative to level the playing field by introducing a GPU marketplace that allows startups, researchers and students to make use of high-performance computing, affordably.
