In March of this year, Stone filed lobbying disclosures indicating he was hired in February to push lawmakers to dismantle US tax provisions underpinning the Department of Justice’s indictment of Ver.

Trump Ally Roger Stone Hired To Help Ver Avoid Jail Time For Tax Evasion

Stone is targeting the “exit tax” law, which applies to Americans renouncing citizenship. It is the reason why Ver is in hot water due to the $48m in taxes the DOJ claims Ver owes.

Last April, the DOJ charged Ver with multiple counts, including mail fraud, tax evasion, and filing false tax returns. The agency alleges Ver submitted false information about his crypto holdings while preparing to expatriate from the US in 2014.

The allegations go on to state that Ver failed to report capital gains after selling around $240 million in Bitcoin in 2017. Ver was arrested in Spain and released on €150,000 bail in May.

His release came with the condition that Ver surrender his passport and report regularly to Spanish authorities while fighting extradition to the US.

The legal push from Ver, who is also known as ‘Crypto Jesus’. It comes amid a pro-crypto pivot since the Trump administration came back into power earlier this year.

In January this year, Ver posted a video regarding his legal troubles. He called it the “weaponization of justice” under the then Biden administration.

Appealing to the incoming President Trump, Ver said; “If there’s anybody that knows what it’s like to be the victim of lawfare for spreading American ideals, it’s Donald Trump.”

Ver Filing A Motion To Dismiss His Case – Hoping For A Similar Outcome To Ross Ulbricht

Ver’s legal team has filed a motion to dismiss the case. They argue that the tax laws cited in the indictment are “vague, outdated, and provide no clear guidance for early adopters of crypto.”

“This prosecution must end,” his attorneys wrote, accusing the DOJ of relying on selective evidence and misrepresenting private communications. Regarding Roger Stone’s part in the dealings, he states he hasn’t directly lobbied Trump for a pardon.

“I have not lobbied any official in the executive branch, including the president.” He told The New York Times, clarifying that his role is focused on supporting Ver’s legal team in an advisory role, behind the scenes.

On the contrary to his ‘behind the scenes’, Stone’s website recently published an essay titled “Why Roger Ver Deserves a Presidential Pardon.”

Stone is an incredibly controversial figure and himself was the recipient of a presidential clemency in 2019.

The long list included; lying to Congress, witness tampering, and obstructing the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

He was sentenced to 40 months in prison. However, Stone never served a day as Trump commuted his sentence in 2020 and later granted a full pardon.
