Vingroup’s Ambitious Green Vision Finds a New Frontier in Indonesia

Just a week after VinFast introduced the VF3 to the Indonesian market, and just over a year after the brand was launched, VinFast CEO Pham Nhat Vuong, who is also Chairman of Vingroup, met with Indonesia President Prabowo Subianto to discuss a shared commitment to sustainable development.

The meeting last March 10, held during Vietnam’s General Secretary To Lam’s state visit to Indonesia, marked a significant step in Vingroup’s growing presence in Southeast Asia’s largest economy.

The discussions centered on VinFast’s ambitious plans to establish a robust electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem in Indonesia. With a proposed investment of 4 trillion Rupiah, the company aims to construct an EV assembly plant in Subang, West Java, capable of producing 50,000 vehicles annually. Complementing this effort is a plan to deploy up to 100,000 EV charging stations across the archipelago, a move that aligns with Indonesia’s aspirations to become a regional hub for EV manufacturing and infrastructure.

However, VinFast’s initiatives are just one facet of Vingroup’s broader strategy in Indonesia.

“VinFast also expressed interest in renewable energy investments, including wind and solar power, although these discussions are still in the early stages. For now, their main focus remains on the electric vehicle industry, which was also the primary topic during their discussion with the President,” Indonesia’s Investment Minister, Rosan Roeslani, told MetroTV, an Indonesian TV station.

Vingroup is studying to set up power plants in West Nusa Tenggara and wind farms in Sulawesi. These ventures aim to harness Indonesia’s abundant natural resources to drive a green transformation.

VinFast aims to establish 100,000 electric vehicle charging stations throughout Indonesia, according to Jakarta’s investment minister. During that same state visit, Roeslani confirmed to the Agence France-Presse (AFP) that VinFast will implement the charging station network incrementally, though specific timelines were not disclosed. This initiative underscores the EV manufacturer’s strategic expansion into Southeast Asia’s largest economy. Given Indonesia’s vast nickel reserves, the nation is actively pursuing its goal to become a pivotal regional EV hub and a key contributor to the global EV supply chain.

The meeting between Subianto and Vuong also highlighted the strategic importance of Indonesia in Vingroup’s global expansion. As Southeast Asia’s largest economy and a key player in the global EV supply chain, Indonesia offers a fertile ground for Vingroup’s innovative ventures. The country’s vast nickel reserves, essential for EV battery production, further enhance its appeal as a strategic partner.
